9/10/24, 11:30 CDT — Francine is moving across the Gulf of Mexico. The National Weather Service forecasts that Francine will make landfall near Morgan City, Louisiana as a category 2 hurricane with top windspeeds of about 100 miles per hour. While New Orleans is not expected to receive a direct hit from the storm, tropical storm-force winds can blow well over 100 miles from the center of the storm – keeping New Orleans in the zone of the storm’s fury.
As the only homeless shelter for youth in New Orleans, Covenant House is getting ready. Staff are canvassing the city to bring youth to Covenant House; moving furniture to make room for new arrivals; coordinating with government officials; double checking supplies; and locking shutters and boarding up windows.
