Moses Gray and a Sunshine, Rainbow Moment
Moses Gray, our facilities director, has seen countless young people walk through our doors. Moses has enjoyed many of what he has dubbed “sunshine, rainbow moments” our youth have experienced over the years, but one young man’s story has stayed with him.
The man arrived here with only a backpack and the determination to build something more for himself. Moses immediately welcomed him in.
During intake, Moses learned that this young man had a passion for construction work. He had experience, but he’d fallen on hard times. So Moses connected him with our job readiness team. Within days, the young man had secured a construction job nearby.
Every evening, Moses would catch him after his shift. They’d talk about work, building confidence, and staying focused. Weeks turned into months of steady progress. Before long, the young man had saved enough money to move into his own apartment.
One day almost a year later, Moses was told the young man was at the doors of Covenant House, asking for “Mr. Moses.” Worried that something was wrong, Moses rushed to meet him — only to be met with a joyful hug.
“Come see,” the young man said. He pulled Moses outside to show him his first car, purchased with the help of an employer who believed in him because Covenant House believed in him first.
“I did it. It worked.”
They laughed, cried, and celebrated. It wasn’t about the car — it was about a young man proving to himself that he could rise above his circumstances. It was a “sunshine, rainbow moment,” as Moses calls it, that shows what’s possible when a young person is met with dignity, guidance, and someone who believes in them.
Right now, there are more young people just like him who need that first act of kindness, that first believer, that first safe place to start again. There are young people who need you.
