Covenant House Updates, Sleep Out

10th Anniversary Sleep Out

The 10th Anniversary Covenant House SLEEP OUT on Thursday, November 18th promises to be a very special night! Our goal is to recruit 200 Sleepers and raise $600,000 to support young people overcoming homelessness in New Orleans.

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the safety of our youth and sleepers is our #1 priority. Attendees who have not been vaccinated will be required to wear masks at all times, unless eating or sleeping. Those who choose to participate virtually will be included in all aspects of our immersive program—from their living rooms or backyards.

Covenant House youth and staff have faced unprecedented challenges in the midst of the pandemic, but their resilience has been inspiring. Like so many of us, they have coped with increased anxiety and depression. At the height of the pandemic, the average daily census at Covenant House grew to 220 youth and children per night – a 40% increase – and over 85% of employed residents lost their jobs. The dedicated staff has continued working 24/7 (at great personal risk) to provide unconditional love, absolute respect, and comprehensive services like food, clothing, shelter, short & long-term housing, medical & behavioral healthcare, individual & family counseling, job training & placement, educational assistance, and more.

Most of the youth at Covenant House have experienced years of physical and/or sexual abuse, domestic and/or street violence, and the resulting profound trauma that often leads to substance abuse, mental health issues, and more. Sleeping Out is our opportunity to let them know they are not alone: that we stand with them in their struggles, celebrate their courage and resilience, and support their promise and dreams.

We’re honored that Jeff & Walton Goldring have signed on as honorary chairs of this year’s event, along with event chairs Karyn Noles Kearney and Christian Rhodes! Early lead sponsors include Gulf Coast Bank & Trust and Allstate.
